And my responses, for Martin...

Captain Martin Crieff

1. Why I Like Him

I like Martin because he suffers from being a sitcom character. He's the most fantastically unlucky person ever, but he's also both unbearably familiar to (he struggles hugely with social situations, no one takes him seriously) and so much better than me (he took seven goes to get his CPL, which to me doesn't show failure, it shows absolute determination and commitment to a goal. He had a dream and he made it real.). Yes, his life is rubbish at times and full of hardship and sacrifice, but holy shit that boy sticks to his guns.

2. Why I Don't

He whinges, he's massively petty, he fails at human interaction so very badly, and he has just so many issues that I recognise, I can't help but dislike him at times. (Also fandom makes me hate him because they make every fucking story about how woobie he is and how pretty he is when he cries and then X character fixes it all with their luck, money and magic healing cock. I know that what I'm really hating is the poor writing, but seriously, urgh. Also, forget Benny's actual face, Martin is a horrible crier. He gets all snotty and blotchy and pulls ugly faces and he makes that terrible creaking noise in the back of his throat.)

3. Favourite Martin Episode

God this was so difficult to choose. I ended up with a shortlist of my favourite episodes, and then I had to go back and look again because I was actually looking not for 'my favourite episodes' but for 'episodes in which I love Martin the most'. That shortlist was a final choice between Douz, Johannesburg and Moloka'i. After much deliberation I decided Moloka'i is my very favourite because of how brilliantly sweet he is to create Christmas on board for Arthur. I know it's Douglas too, but Martin tries so hard, doesn't have an ulterior motive, and he's also a little bit taken by the whole thing like he misses Christmas and being allowed to be that excited about it.

4. Favourite Martin Series

I didn't find this quite as tough to pick as the episode, but Martin and Douglas', and Martin and Arthur's friendships really develop and grow over the course of series 2. After the secrets are out of the way Douglas and Martin start needling each other less, and the teasing starts to come across as the friendly kind of teasing that families develop. This all comes together for the Christmas Special, Moloka'i, which is technically not part of any series, but that I count as Series 2 and a half.

Series 3 has more of the same, but feels really rather Martin-light as a series (and not just because of Benny's absence for 'Newcastle') as Herc and Carolyn's relationship starts to take up more air time (not that I regret it because I love Herc and Carolyn together). Series 4 contains Martin being deliciously evil and Martin interacting with his siblings and Mum, as well as his luck finally going the right way what with him meeting Princess Theresa etc. (I haven't actually heard Xinxhou or Yverdon-les-Bains yet, but I have been minorly spoilered, so yeah.)

Um, so if that wasn't clear, I pick series 2 because of the happy snuggly feelings I have for it. That might change, who knows, but at the moment I want to snuggle series 2.

5. Favourite Martin Line

Oh God I am genuinely torn. Martin mostly has reactionary lines or Douglas delivering lines at him. He rarely has the punchline. However, there are times. I have something of a hate for embarrassment and specifically for people being humiliated, so that rules out a lot of Martin's better lines because almost immediately someone will come along (usually Douglas, but not always) and knock him down again. Thus my final decision is a tie between

"A man who can imitate a Spanish squirrel helping forty-eight men mow a meadow is capable of anything"

and

"No. I’m sorry, Carolyn. I carried the sheep for you. I climbed the tree. I rode the back of the truck. But now I have to X-ray these geese."

I wish I could have used Martin's badass 'I Am A Professional' speech from Qikiqtarjuaq, but the immediate en-lemoning of him makes me squirm.

6. Favourite Outfit

The shiniest Captain's hat in the world. The stripes. Four of them. Better fuckin' recognise son. Martin be the Captain of this crew.

(Millicanon wise, I've gotta say my favourite Martin look was the utterly filthy, post-climbing-through-plane-junkyard Martin, but that hardly counts.)

7. OTP

I only listened to Vaduz recently and oh my crikey, I ship Martin and Theresa but hard. I hope she can help mend him a bit. Not fix him, just paper over some of the cracks. I have a horrible tendency to love awful, co-dependent, unhealthy relationships, but Martin and Theresa seems quite healthy. Yeah, he needs her more than she needs him (by quite a long way actually) but they could work on some stuff. And Martin could use some love in his life.

8. BroTP

I'm not sure. Martin doesn't have all that many friends, it's basically just limited to Douglas and Arthur. Douglas is too old to be a Bro, and Arthur is too sweet to be a Bro, but either Arthur (in Series 1 before he got really childlike instead of just being a bit simple) or we give up and you have to accept my OC Thommy, who isn't especially Bro with Martin in particular, but is one of Martin's current housemates and also part puppy, part DudeBro (and is thus Bro with everyone).

9. Head Canon - Backstory

I think I need to pick just one bit to write about because holy shit I have a lot of head canon for Martin...

  • Um, he's the youngest of his siblings, Caitlin is the oldest, Simon's the middle one.
  • Caitie has a husband and three children, Simon has a long-term girlfriend.
  • Martin first decided he wanted to be an aeroplane after being taken to an air show aged four, it wasn't until he was six that Simon told him he couldn't be an aeroplane so he decided he had to be a pilot instead.
  • Martin's favourite book as a kid was one with an exploded diagram of an aeroplane in it. He memorised all the parts.
  • Martin had twelve Airfix planes attached to his bedroom ceiling up until he moved out. He made all of them. His Mum chucked them out when they moved. He still misses them.
  • Martin's housemates have a gentleman's agreement not to disturb him when they shouldn't, and thus the calendar on the fridge has everyone in the house's schedules on it so they can plan gatherings for the nights when Martin's not home.
  • They also have a gentleman's agreement that whenever anyone in the house makes tea, they shout for the whole house in case someone else wants some too. Unless it's in the middle of the night.

...I could go on for a while like this.

(Bits that are my head canon rather than show canon are in italics in this question.)

10. Unpopular Opinion

Martin only looks a bit like Benny. He's only 5'8 for a start. He's got scrubby ginger hair and more freckles than he likes, and he's much scrawnier than Benny. He's not pretty. He might, under the right circumstances be kind-of attractive, or at least his stammering might be found adorable if you were in that sort of mood, but he's not actually that good looking. (And nor is Benny, but that's a personal opinion and nothing to do with this.)

He has issues, yes, but he is also not completely incapable of acting as an adult. He is, in fact, a human being with flaws and fluctuating moods and sometimes he can cope and sometimes he can't. He can be sweet and caring or petty and vindictive, sometimes both at the same time. Yes he's fictional, but deep down he's neither a good or bad guy, but a person, and it irritates me that very few people can seem to write him as a fully rounded character.

Sorry. Rant over. TL;DR - Martin =/= Benedict, some people are crap at writing, and attractiveness is relative bitches.

11. A Wish

I wish Martin could have a proper Crowning Moment of Awesome that wasn't stomped all over two minutes later.

12. An Oh-God-Please-Don't-Ever-Happen

Hester McCauley must never return or I will be forced to make Kaidy hurt her a lot.

13. Five Words to Describe Him

Neurotic, Caring, Awkward, Determined, Captain.

14. My Nickname for Him

My head canon has his nickname as a child being Marty. At least that's what his Mum used to call him when he was only wee, but then Caitlin called him it in front of a friend's brother, and it was used for mean teasing on the playground. He rather insisted on just Martin after that.

Kaidy on the other hand, has nicknamed him Red. Which isn't my nickname for him, but he's growing to like it a lot more than anything I could give him. (Red for his hair colour originally, though I'm beginning to think also because of the colour she can make his ears turn in two seconds flat.)

...This concludes today's random blargh.
